The Waioeka Journey

The Waioeka Journey - Te Awa a Tamatea is situated on State Highway 2 between Opotiki and Gisborne. The highway follows a route carved by rivers through the steep forested hills of the Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve.

Tracks, Walkways & Cycleways

With some 160 kilometres of Pacific Ocean coastline and well over 11,000 Km2 of native bush (about half of our land area is Department of Conservation estate) within our boundaries, Opotiki is a natural playgound with few equals.  Walking, tramping and cycling opportunities abound here and this guide will lead you to some of our best, easily accessible walkways and cycling experiences. Remember to take adequate food, refreshments, clothing and basic first aid requirements for the length and diffi culty of walk or cycle involved and check weather conditions before setting off.
