Opotiki Trolley Derby

The Crooked road course is a steep and challenging course which will only be run by safe and sturdy trolleys. It is expected that the best trolleys running the full course will get up to speeds of 60 Kph plus and all drivers will have to use their brakes to safely negotiate the last sweeping left hand bend. Crash Barriers will be erected with hay bales for any accidents.

Although all necessary care has been taken trolley riding is risky and entrants participate at their own risk.

1.      All Trolleys must be certified by Mick Sauer From Opotiki College and have obtained a certificate of compliance from him

2.      All trolleys must be run on no less than 4 Wheels No three wheelers

3.      All Trolleys must have a braking system to the rear axle or rear wheels

4.      The only means of propulsion is gravity. If a trolley has gearing or pedals then the drive mechanism to the wheel must be removed prior to racing.

5.      All riders must ride in a feet first position, lying down is permitted but no head first.

6.      Trolleys must not be longer than 3000mm or 1200mm wide at the wheels.

7.      All trolleys  have to picked up by 2 handlers at the start and finish line. Excessively weighted trolleys will not be allowed to race    

8.       All riders must have an approved safety helmet (Cycle helmets sufficient). Knee and Elbow pads are recommended

9.      All riders must wear full length sleeves and trousers and closed in shoes and wear gloves.

10. It is suggested that entrants come to Opotiki and look at the course prior to constructing their trolleys so they can appreciate what is required.

11. All trolleys must be in the pit area prior to the start of their class where they will be transported to the top of the hill

12. No more than 2 drivers per trolley per class.

13. Entry fee is per driver not per trolley

14. The judges decision is final
