Silent Film Festival

Cinema just like it was in the old days!
LIVE Piano Accompaniment on the Bechstein Grand Piano for all Feature Films,
plus Short Films and Newsreels of the era.
The beautiful Art Deco Deluxe Theatre at the northern end of Church Street plays host to an annual three day Silent Film Festival. A series of silent classics are screened to live accompaniment on the theatre's recently restored Bechstein grand piano. Previously presented movies have included romantic comedies, historical drama's, a classic horror film, hilarious comedies from Keaton and Chaplin, and a variety of other presentations.
The New Zealand Film Archive plays a major part in bringing NZ films to the Opotiki big screen. There is always a series of short films and reels of the era to accompany the main films.
Cinemagoers are encouraged to help recreate the atmosphere of the golden age of silent cinema by dressing up in appropriate 1920's and 30's costumes for the films and the theatre is decorated apprpriately for the event with items loaned from the Opotiki museum.
